Adamo – Ted Dekker

Con Adamo viene sdoganato in Italia Ted Dekker, già affermato in America e autore di numerosi best seller. La trama di questo romanzo vede Daniel Clark, profiler dell’FBI, alle prese da oltre un anno con un caso complicatissimo: Eva. Si tratta di un serial killer che ammazza una donna al mese, a ogni luna nuova, seguendo un rituale sconvolgente, partiroti da una mente lucida e organizzata, ma dissestata da manie religiose. Alle vittime non viene inflitta alcuna violenza, né fisica né sessuale; la morte arriva lentamente a causa una malattia sconosciuta dal decorso fulminante, del tutto simile alla meningite. Ma chi è Eva? Nonostante il preciso profilo tracciato da Daniel, per l’FBI la sua identità resta avvolta nel mistero. Poi una notte Eva decide di voler uccidere un uomo. Vuole il suo primo Adamo, e opta per Daniel. Per un istante, il profiler riesce a scorgere il volto dell’assassino, poi uno sparo e il buio. Tecnicamente morto, Daniel viene rianimato ma al risveglio non ricorda niente della sparatoria. Il volto del serial killer è però nascosto da qualche parte nella sua mente, gli provoca feroci attacchi di panico, incubi che non gli danno pace. Proprio quando Clark è giunto ormai allo stremo delle forze, Eva compie la più inaspettata delle mosse, costringendolo a rimettere in discussione le proprie convinzioni sulla vita e sulla morte, sul bene e sul male.

L’ombra del falco è il thriller d’esordio di Pierluigi Porazzi, edito da Marsilio, un romanzo teso con protagonista un serial killer piuttosto inquietante. A questo libro è dedicata la recensione odierna di ThrillerCafe.it

Trama in sintesi:
Alla sola vista dell’ombra del falco, le possibili vittime si immobilizzano o fuggono terrorizzate. Anche se sono venuti al mondo, sanno già che è un predatore, è un’informazione conservata nel loro DNA. E allo stesso modo in cui il rapace sconvolge la vita delle sue prede, così un predatore di uomini sconvolge una tranquilla cittadina della provincia friulana. Il cadevere sventrato di una ragazza viene rinvenuto in una discarica. A distanza di pochi giorni, alla questura arriva una busta: all’interno una lettera e un DVD, con cui l’assassino lancia la sua sfida alla polizia, e in particolare all’ex agente Alex Nero, che viene richiamato in servizio per cercare di catturare il serial killer. La via per arrivare alla soluzione del caso sarà tortuosa e costellata di pericoli, fino alla sconvolgente rivelazione finale.

Esordio letterario di Porazzi, L’ombra del falco è un thriller che all’inizio mi è sembrato ricalcare pedissequamente la tradizione americana e il boom del 2009 nel genere: Il suggeritore, di Donato Carrisi. Il libro parte con idee che paiono poco originali: a un certo punto c’è una trovata narrativa che ricalca quasi fedelmente un passaggio de L’ombra, di McFadyen, e mi è venuto il dubbio di trovarmi di fronte a uno dei tanti libri “clone” con protagonisti assassini seriali e un po’ di gore traslati in ambientazione italiana.
Ma procedendo nella lettura lo scenario poco alla volta è cambiato radicalmente: niente era più come sembrava, l’intreccio si faceva più fitto e i ruoli si ribaltavano. E’ emersa, dietro l’apparente banalità, una trama inattesa e avvincente, densa di colpi di scena e di momenti di suspense. I personaggi sono cresciuti e ogni tassello ha cominciato ad andare al proprio posto, mentre il ritmo cresceva. Alla fine, quando l’identità del serial killer pareva essere acquisita, ecco il nuovo ribaltone nella tradizione del Deaver dei tempi d’oro, perfettamente preparato da indizi sparsi nel corso del romanzo ma ai quali fino all’ultimo non s’è data importanza.
In definitiva, a mio parere è un ottimo ingresso nel mondo del thriller, e dalla porta principale, questo di Porazzi e quindi gli diamo un bel voto positivo, facendo i complimenti anche a Marsilio per avere pubblicato ancora una volta un esordiente che merita.
Vista la chiusura del romanzo, poi, potrebbe anche esserci in futuro un sequel: sicuramente, qui al ThrillerCafé lo attendiamo con interesse.

uTorrent Accused of Unfairness, Banned by Trackers

One of the most significant changes in the new uTorrent is uTP, the ‘micro transfer protocol’. UTP is a new and improved implementation of the BitTorrent protocol which is designed to be more network-friendly than its predecessor.

With uTP, uTorrent has become more network aware as it will throttle itself if congestion is detected in the network. The uTorrent teams hopes this improvement will eliminate the need for ISPs to throttle BitTorrent traffic, while its users should see less interference with other local applications.

The effectiveness of uTP is still being debated, but some people in the BitTorrent community have noticed another issue. According to some owners of private BitTorrent trackers, uTorrent is no longer playing fair. Since uTorrent users are the only ones using the new protocol, uTorrent favors its own kind over other clients.

This means that when connecting to other clients, uTorrent users will give preference to other uTorrent users, behavior that some have characterized as unfair. As a result, several private BitTorrent trackers have refused to put the newer uTorrent releases on their whitelists, effectively banning the client and forcing their users to stick with the older versions.

Simon Morris, BitTorrent’s VP of Product Management admits that the tracker owners have a point, but says that it is very hard to innovate without having to face such technical downsides. “This is part of the challenge of innovation… but hopefully a challenge we’ll overcome,” Morris told TorrentFreak.

“We’re well aware of these discussions and have been very receptive to the feedback we have received. uTP is being constantly tuned and like any advanced technology on the internet there are edge cases where there’s room for improvement,” Morris adds.

BitTorrent Inc. has opened up the specifications of the uTP protocol and hosted a conference in their San Fransisco offices a few weeks ago to discuss uTP in detail with developers of some of the most popular Bittorrent clients. According to Morris, other popular client developers have shown interest in implementing uTP into their own applications.

Widespread support for the new protocol would of course be the easiest way to get rid of the unfairness allegations, but uTorrent’s major competitor Vuze has no plans to support uTP in the short term. On the other hand, Vuze doesn’t believe the unfairness will result in a noticeable disadvantage for its users.

“In terms of speed, we do not buy-in to the ‘threat’ cited by some, claiming that uTP can result in slower downloads for non-uTP clients due to uTP clients favoring each other during the torrent cold start phase,” Olivier Chalouhi, CTO told TorrentFreak.

Vuze is keeping a close eye on how uTP evolves and will consider adding it to their own client as the technology matures. For now Vuze will continue to work on their own congestion solutions and speed improvements. They have already added UDP transfer support, but not as the primary protocol.

“Vuze added support for UDP transport a few years ago, as a fallback for when TCP connection attempts fail. To date, Vuze chose not to implement UDP as a first-class protocol, as we consciously wanted to avoid claims of a Vuze-specific protocol bias, which we do not believe serves the BitTorrent community at large,” Chalouhi said.

Whether uTorrent’s choice to push uTP forward results in any significant disadvantages for users of other clients is still open for debate. BitTorrent Inc. is, however, committed to play fair and will make the necessary adjustments where needed.

Thus far, only a few private trackers have decided to ban uTorrent and there are currently no signs that it will spread out to more.

IFPI Gives Up Trying To Force ISP to Block The Pirate Bay

In March 2009 the IFPI and several local movie studios began threatening Telenor, Norway’s largest ISP. Block your customers from accessing The Pirate Bay, they demanded, or we will take legal action and get the courts to force you.

Telenor refused to comply and was taken to court. In November 2009 the verdict was handed down – the courts decided that the ISP had no obligation to block the world’s most infamous torrent site.

The IFPI wasn’t about to give in so easily, with CEO Marte Thorsby insisting the court had ruled incorrectly. Music performing rights outfit, TONO, confirmed the case would go to an appeal.

In early February the Borgarting Court of Appeal announced that the appeal had been rejected as there was no basis under Norwegian law for the claim. IFPI and TONO said they would consider their options, i.e make a decision as to whether or not they would take the case to the Supreme Court.

Yesterday, in a surprise announcement – it’s not like the entertainment industries to give in so easily – IFPI and TONO said they will not take their appeal to Norway’s highest court.

“We wanted to get a legal clarification on whether under Norwegian law it is possible to order ISPs to block access to The Pirate Bay,” said TONO in a statement. “Now we have two clear decisions that there is no legal authority under Norwegian law for such blocking requirements.”

Following the November ruling, TONO said that it was possible that the authorities had not implemented the EU Copyright Directive properly in 2005, a line they continue to stand by.

“We interpret both [court] decisions as suggesting that questions have been raised about whether the EU Copyright Directive was adequately implemented in Norwegian law,” TONO added.

Marte Thorsby of the IFPI said that continuing with legal action would be a waste of time and money, and joined TONO in their calls for clearer legislation.

“The Court of Appeal wrote in its ruling that the limits of complicit liability are unclear, and we expect that the ongoing revision of the Copyright Act will close this legal ‘hole’,” said Thorsby.

Premio Europa 2010 a Biancamaria Massaro

Dare buone notizie mi fa sempre piacere, soprattutto quando protagonisti sono amici di penna come Biancamaria Massaro, che zitta zitta s’è portata a casa un altro premio letterario (ormai avrà perso il conto anche lei, credo). Come si legge sul sito Cattiva Bambina:

Oscar Win Boosts Hurt Locker’s Piracy Numbers

While BitTorrent’s Oscar went to District 9, the Academy members chose The Hurt Locker as the best picture of 2009. As was the case with most previous Oscar winners, the film’s overwhelming win encouraged many BitTorrent users to fire up their download client to see what all the fuzz is about.

The day after the award show ‘the hurt locker’ was the most typed in search phrase on BitTorrent, with ‘hurt locker’ ending up in ninth place. This increased demand was also reflected in the download numbers which skyrocketed. Since its win at the Oscars the film has been downloaded well over a million times.

Interestingly, The Hurt Locker was already available online in high quality for more than a year, and months before it premiered in movie theaters in the United States. The film’s screener leaked in February of last year, but it has never generated as many downloads as it did this week. Thanks to the Oscar boost, the total number of Hurt Locker downloads on BitTorrent are now nearing 10 million.

The sudden rise in demand is of course not limited to BitTorrent and other file-sharing networks. A film that does well on BitTorrent is usually doing well at the box-office or in the movie stores too, and indeed, DVD sales for The Hurt Locker went up at an equal rate.

This week the DVD topped the bestseller list at the online retailer Amazon and Director of Sky Box Office, Ian Lewis, reports a “significant increase” in demand on its Sky Box pay-per-view service. Similarly, the number of theaters playing the film is doubling this weekend to accommodate the ‘Oscar Bounce.’

The Hurt Locker was not the only Oscar winner to see a boost in unauthorized downloads after last Sunday. Crazy Heart, The Blind Side and Precious and Up saw a similar but less pronounced upswing.

Oscar Winner Wants Kids and ISPs Targeted to Prevent Piracy

The Film Distributors’ Association (FDA) is the trade body for UK theatrical film distributors. As a member of the UK’s Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT), FDA is also engaged on-going initiatives to combat film piracy.

FDA president and Oscar-winning Chariots of Fire producer (Lord) David Puttnam recently gave a keynote speech where he called for new measures to be taken against Internet piracy.

One option is the increasingly common targeting of children, with Puttnam suggesting that the concept of intellectual property needs to be “embedded inextricably into the school curriculum.” Children need to be taught that if they want movies in new ways and formats they have to pay for them, he added.

Puttnam said that the FDA-sponsored project to get this information into schools is well underway, with one in five primary schools (that’s 5 to 11 year-olds) having been serviced by the charity set up to distribute pro-movie and pro-copyright information.

While it may be beneficial to educate young people about what copyright is, there are a problem areas. First and foremost is where this information is coming from, i.e interested parties. Since the focus of this information will be aimed at ‘protecting’ its members, in order to maintain a balance, who will tell the children about the drawbacks of restrictive copyright?

Second, we all know that children are like sponges, soaking up information at an amazing rate with an amazing capacity for learning, but should copyright really be taught to the detriment of other subjects in an already intensely crowded curriculum?

Will a 7 year-old really be able to grasp the huge complexities of even basic copyright law? Will he or she be expected to know the difference between, let’s say, the BBC-provided iPlayer service and the dozens of unauthorized sites providing movies and TV shows at the click of a button? Even adults have difficulty telling the difference.

But in the main, will kids care? If an interview we conducted in 2007 is anything to go by, probably not.

Even now, more than 2 years later, although the kid we interviewed is much more aware of what is ‘right and ‘wrong’, she still has no problem with clicking a link and getting media for free. She told me recently that she doesn’t care about how it got there, only that it is. She strongly sees the back issues as not her problem. It’s difficult to blame her – how would we react if some guy in a suit tried to burden us with this stuff at 12 years old?

Along with the educational element to his organization’s work against piracy, Puttnam says he believes that the Digital Economy Bill lacks teeth and more pressure needs to be brought against ISPs.

“One of the mistakes made is allowing the ISPs to pretend they are not part of a retail chain,” said Puttnam. “If you or I wanted to open a chemist shop we would have to pay attention to health and safety and the nature of the products that we sold. We couldn’t just serve anyone, for instance.”

Of course, ISPs are responsible for the product they sell, but they sell bandwidth over which other companies sell products or provide services for which they are responsible.

Continuing the emotive ‘chemist’ analogy, although legally there is a requirement for them to sell safe products, they cannot be held responsible, say, if some pharmaceutical giant makes a huge error and packs poison inside a paracetamol package. Is the pharmacist really expected to open every packet of every medicine he sells checking for something dangerous inside? So why should ISPs be expected to do the same?

In his speech, Puttnam also called for a change in legislation to outlaw the use of camcorders in UK cinemas, something which is currently entirely legal. Despite this legal status, it didn’t stop the FDA from convincing UK charity CrimeStoppers last year to partner in a campaign to encourage the public to be vigilant and help prevent camcording.

Although Puttnam’s speech had its faults, he is absolutely, unequivocally right about one thing. Film content must be made available legally online “in ways consumers want, and at prices they can afford” in order to discourage the use of illicit file-sharing.

This should be the number one priority of the movie and music industries.

President Obama Discusses Three Strikes Anti-Piracy Law

For years the entertainment industry has been lobbying for tougher measures against online piracy. In France this has resulted in the implementation of a ‘three strikes and you’re offline’ regime and many other countries are considering similar measures.

Thus far the United States Government has kept relatively quiet on this issue, but that doesn’t mean that such plans are not being discussed behind close doors.

According to Ari Emanuel, a famous Hollywood talent agent and the model for the character Ari Gold in the hit series Entourage, Hollywood lobbyists are working hard to convince President Obama and others to ram through similar legislation in the United States.

“We are in the midst of talking to the president and some attorney generals and [we are] trying to implement a three strikes and you’re out rule,” Emanuel said, while adding that this issue would most likely result in a “fight with ISPs”.

At this point it is impossible to assess the exact nature of these talks, but since Ari Emanuel is the brother of White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, there is no doubt that these talks are taken seriously. President Obama, who vouched to decrease the power of lobbyists in Washington, is not turning a deaf ear to this one for now.

Before even considering the implementation of a three-strikes model, United States lawmakers might want to take a good look at what’s happening in France. Unlike earlier projections that up to 95% of the file-sharers could stop downloading copyrighted content, the piracy rate has actually increased in the face of the new law.

The entertainment industry, nevertheless, continues to push legislation as the solution to online piracy, while ignoring their own role in the creation of the problem.

L’uomo dagli occhi glauchi

L’uomo dagli occhi glauchi è il nuovo romanzo di Patrizia Debicke che prende il titolo dall’omonimo quadro di Tiziano (noto anche come “Ritratto di giovane inglese”). La tela ritrae un giovane aristocratico di cui non si è mai accertata l’dentità. Che fosse il giovane Lord Templeton, figlioccio del potente duca di Norfolk? Nel libro, inviato in Italia per conto di quest’ultimo, il giovane resta folgorato dal pittore veneziano e gli chiede di fargli un ritratto. Ma in realtà la richiesta è anche un pretesto per nascondere il vero motivo del suo viaggio: da cattolico deciso a contrastare le follie senili di Enrico VIII, Lord Templeton vuole saggiare i rapporti con il papato e la Spagna all’indomani del concilio di Trento, nel momento di massima tensione fra cattolici e protestanti. E ben presto il giovane nobile scoprirà che le ragioni della fede e della politica non si fanno valere solo con le armi della diplomazia, ma anche con la violenza e l’inganno.

Alfredo Colitto intervistato per ThrillerCafé

Oggi pubblichiamo un’intervista che Alfredo Colitto ha concesso gentilmente a Silvia Torrealta per ThrillerCafé. Buona lettura!

1) Dopo Cuore di ferro è uscito da poche settimane il tuo secondo thriller storico I discepoli del fuoco. Ti definiresti scrittore di romanzi storici, scrittore di genere o semplicemente scrittore? Perché?

Mi vanno bene tutte e tre le definizioni, tutte insieme. Scrivo romanzi storici, quindi sono uno scrittore di romanzi storici. I miei romanzi, storici e non, sono dei thriller, quindi sono uno scrittore di genere. Ma fondamentalmente, al di là di tutte le etichette, si tratta di romanzi. Quindi mi definisco uno scrittore. Alla fine, la definizione più semplice è anche la migliore.

2) “Ogni libro dialoga con altri libri” afferma Umberto Eco. Ma ciascuno di essi ha la sua peculiarità. Quali elementi distinguono, oltre alla trama, ovviamente, “I discepoli del fuoco” e lo caratterizzano al di là della trilogia cui appartiene e degli altri romanzi che hai scritto?

Penso che la caratteristica peculiare de “I discepoli del fuoco”, come anche di “Cuore di ferro”, sia quella di coniugare uno stile moderno con un’idea e un’immagine forte del passato. Il linguaggio è la parte che curo di più, oltre alla ricerca storica. Nei miei romanzi non storici, ovviamente la cura per lo stile è la stessa, ma non c’è la necessità di adeguare parole, frasi e metafore all’epoca in cui è ambientato il libro.

3) I personaggi femminili che appaiono nei tuoi romanzi sono figure forti e consapevoli; questo ritratto dell’universo femminile fa parte delle tue convinzioni sul ruolo che le donne possono avere o è solo funzionale alle storie che scrivi?

Sono convinto che le donne non solo “possono avere” un ruolo forte nella società, ma l’hanno sempre avuto.
I miei personaggi femminili comunque non riflettono tanto un’idea sociale della donna, ma il fascino che le donne esercitano su di me in quanto universo “altro”. Spesso dico che nei miei romanzi chi comanda è la storia. Se un personaggio non è funzionale all’intreccio, viene cambiato o eliminato senza pietà, che sia uomo o donna. A meno che, ovviamente, il personaggio mi piaccia tanto da cambiare la storia per poterlo ospitare. Come dire: non ci sono regole. O meglio, ci sono solo quelle che decido io. Questo mi piace del mestiere di scrittore.

4) Tu traduci anche dall’inglese romanzi di autori importanti. Le tue due attività letterarie, scrivere e tradurre, hanno interagito fra loro o si svolgono parallelamente senza contaminazioni?

Si svolgono parallelamente, spesso anche nello stesso giorno (scrittura la mattina e traduzione il pomeriggio) e interagiscono parecchio tra loro. Il lavoro di traduttore consiste in pratica nello “smontare” un testo e “rimontarlo” in un’altra lingua. In questo processo è facile notare i lati migliori e i punti deboli di una storia, il linguaggio, la scorrevolezza o meno delle frasi. E naturalmente quando scrivo questa è una lezione che conta.

5) Individui un percorso esplicativo, non casuale, dal tuo primo romanzo “Cafè Nopal” a “I discepoli del fuoco”, attraverso gli altri romanzi che hai scritto?

Un percorso a mio avviso c’è sempre, persino in uno scrittore come me, che non riesce a conformarsi a un unico genere.
Il mio caso è quasi emblematico. Ho scritto un noir d’avventura ambientato in Messico, un giallo medico, un noir di ecomafia e persino una favola su un albero che cerca l’illuminazione, per poi approdare al thriller storico. Eppure tra questi romanzi ci sono più punti in comune di quanto possa sembrare a una prima occhiata. Il viaggio, che sia in un diverso paese o in una diversa epoca storica. Il protagonista che si sente straniero in una realtà che in parte gli sfugge. Lo stile, l’uso della scansione temporale e di punti di vista diversi, persino quando uso la prima persona narrativa. Eccetera. Preferisco non dirli tutti e lasciare che siano i lettori a scoprirli.
