Archetipi è finalmente uscito. Un libro dalla gestazione lunga, ma fruttuosa, vista la grande qualità dei racconti inclusi. Incidentalmente, ce n’è pure uno mio, ma non è quello che alza il livello. Tra i 12 autori dell’opera, infatti, ci sono nomi di tutto rispetto: Danilo Arona è uno che non vi devo presentare certo io, e chi bazzica il giro dell’underground italiano conoscerà sicuramente Elvezio Sciallis, o scoprirà a breve Samuel Marolla (da poco pubblicato da Mondadori). Gente che sa come si racconta una storia, che sa avvincere e inquietare. Stare al loro fianco per me può essere solo motivo d’orgoglio.
Potessi tessere le lodi dell’antologia senza essere indicato come l’oste che elogia il vino della propria cantina, lo farei, perché merita. Ma non posso, e quindi vi rimando al sito dell’editore (l’ottimo Edizioni XII), semmai leggete la prefazione di Gianfranco Nerozzi, date un’occhiata alle tavole di Diramazioni che impreziosiscono il libro, godetevi i booktrailer, constatate che c’è uno sconto niente male, e vedete se trovate un motivo per non comprarlo…
Poi mi farete sapere.

Nel 2004, scompaiono dall’Istituto di medicina legale di Padova 44 chilogrammi di droga pesante. L’Alligatore è incaricato di indagare e scoprire l’identità dei ladri. Due anni dopo scompare Sylvie, la donna di Beniamino Rossini, la danzatrice del ventre che lui aveva incontrato anni prima in un night del Nordest. Il vecchio gangster la cerca ovunque. Molto presto l’Alligatore, Rossini e Max la Memoria si ritrovano nell’obiettivo di un nemico misterioso che li ricatta e li obbliga a entrare in un gioco mortale.
2009. L’Alligatore e i suoi amici sono ancora in pericolo e aspettano la mossa successiva del loro avversario.
Una storia di malavita in un mondo in cui le regole di un tempo non esistono più. Soltanto il passato torna sempre a chiedere il conto.

Si respira un’aria da noir francese in questo L’amore del bandito, ultima fatica del mai abbastanza celebrato Massimo Carlotto. Un’atmosfera quasi crepuscolare avvolge i tre protagonisti del romanzo, e suggerisce sin dalle prime pagine che la storia andrà a sconvolgere le loro vite come mai prima era successo. Ritorna Marco Buratti, alias l’Alligatore, la più famosa creazione letteraria di Carlotto, e l’amore di cui si parla nel titolo è quello di Beniamino Rossini, il gangster vecchio stampo che appende ai polsi tanti braccialetti quante vittime ha mietuto durante la sua lunga carriera. La sua donna, Sylvie, viene rapita dopo che un ambiguo figuro, con scarso successo, tenta di reclutare Buratti e i suoi amici affinché scoprano gli autori di un imponente furto di stupefacenti di qualche anno prima. Fatto due più due, Buratti e Rossini, assieme a Max La Memoria a chiudere l’inossidabile terzetto, si mettono sulle tracce dei misteriosi committenti per scoprire dove si trova Sylvie e riuscire così a liberarla.
Il percorso sarà lungo e molto pericoloso, e precipiterà i tre in mezzo alla guerra tra quelle nuove e spietate mafie, di stampo prevalentemente slavo, che si contendono il territorio in Italia e all’estero. Gente spietata, crudele, che a volte lascia interdetti persino i tre protagonisti. Anche questo non è un paese per vecchi, tenta forse di suggerire l’autore, perché una cosa è certa: la nuova generazione di criminali è in lotta per conquistare il potere, e lo fa con metodi brutali. L’Alligatore e i suoi compagni sono uomini tutti d’un pezzo, ma hanno il fiato corto e la ruggine nelle ossa, e a volte l’esperienza sembra non bastare. Così sono costretti a tenere un profilo basso, ad arretrare quando vorrebbero andare avanti, a riconoscere che il nemico, questa volta, è più forte di loro.
Atmosfera crepuscolare, si diceva all’inizio: il romanzo copre un arco di cinque anni, e sembra incanalare le vite dei protagonisti in una parabola discendente. Il loro mondo, che pareva aver trovato un equilibrio, è sconvolto da avvenimenti al di là del loro volere, ed è chiaro che le cose non saranno più le stesse.
E’ questa l’ultima avventura dell’Alligatore? In realtà si potrebbe presupporre il contrario, dato che il libro si chiude con una sorta di anti-finale, rimanendo appeso a uno sviluppo della trama che l’autore ha preferito non raccontarci, forse conservandolo per un ipotetico seguito. Eppure leggendo il romanzo si ha la sensazione che la parola fine aleggi più volte sullo sfondo, come un presagio. Fine delle cose come le conosciamo, di tutte le certezze, dei punti di riferimento. Solo una cosa rimane sempre la stessa, ed è tra gli aspetti più commoventi dell’intera poetica di Carlotto: l’inossidabile amicizia fra i tre protagonisti. In un mondo dove tutto cambia ad una velocità nauseante, il vincolo tra loro non si spezza mai, ma rimane ben saldo, anche al termine della peggiore traversata all’inferno che il destino possa loro riservare.
Una speranza che consola, al termine di una storia che commuove per la sua tristezza. Il noir non illude i suoi lettori, e non risparmia di ribadire che il mondo è un gran brutto posto dove vivere, se il destino ci da in mano le carte sbagliate.
Con il suo stile secco e allo stesso tempo raffinato, Carlotto declina ancora una volta con immutata maestria le regole di questo genere letterario, che ancora sembra non avvertire la stanchezza dell’età.

E’ uscito oggi 29 novembre La stirpe di Salomone, nuovo libro di Clive Cussler con Paul Kemprecos.

In August the bandwidth supplier to The Pirate Bay was ordered by a court to disconnect the world’s largest BitTorrent tracker from the Internet.

Within hours the site had relocated to a new host, which immediately received similar threats. After periods of downtime, the Pirate Bay eventually regained stability in recent days.

Although these attempts failed, the authorities weren’t about to give up in their quest to shut down the site.

The Stockholm District Court has now ordered that two of the site’s founding members – Gottfrid Svartholm and Fredrik Neij – are now banned from operating the site. Failure to comply with the court’s decision will result in fines of 500,000 kronor ($71,600) each.

Ex-Pirate Bay spokesman Peter Sunde, who appears to be excluded from the decision, is notably annoyed, noting that neither the founders nor the site are located in Sweden. He argues that the Swedish court has no jurisdiction in this case.

“It means nothing,” Peter told TorrentFreak, adding that it is bothersome that they have to invest time in cases like this.

“The Stockholm City Court is located in Stockholm. Stockholm is in Sweden. Swedish borders apply. Frederick and Godfrid live outside Sweden, even outside the EU. The Pirate Bay is outside the EU,” he told SR earlier today.

“How then can the Stockholm District Court, Sweden, get to decide that people abroad must not work on a site in another country?”

Another issue that complicates the ruling is that it is pretty much impossible to check whether or not Fredrik and Gottfrid are complying to the demands. Thus far the Pirate Bay website is still up and running and the two founders are not essential to keep it that way.

Back in August the UK government announced tough plans for dealing with online piracy. While the music and movie industries were notably supportive, opposition to the proposals were widespread. Those hoping that politicians might have had second thoughts are disappointed today.

While delaying a final decision until the next parliament, Business Secretary Peter Mandelson yesterday confirmed plans to have UK residents accused of illicit file-sharing disconnected from the Internet as a “last resort”.

Preceded by months of sending warning letters with an aim of achieving a 70% reduction in online piracy by 2011, Mandelson claims that only persistent offenders would be affected by the harshest measures – those accused of infringing copyrights multiple times.

However, downloading a single music track constitutes an infringement, so being accused on the basis of three or four tracks downloaded over a period of months could be enough to have an entire household disconnected from the Internet. Hardly the promised “proportionate” response.

While the Business Secretary is insisting that there will be an independent appeals process to ensure that any accusations are accurate, his words aren’t inspiring confidence with Internet service providers.

Yesterday, BT Group made a statement indicating its concern at the government’s proposals, noting its disappointed that ISPs will have to bear some of the costs of the scheme, resulting in increased prices for broadband customers.

As detailed earlier, those costs are likely to spiral to £365m per annum, putting the alleged music industry piracy “losses” of £200m in the shade.

“We are also interested to hear whether or not customers will have some form of fair legal hearing before their broadband supplier is required to take any action against them,” said BT.

TalkTalk, the UK’s second largest ISP, owner of the Tiscali and AOL brands and operator of the Dont Disconnnect Us website, went much further.

“The approach is based on the principle of ‘guilty until proven innocent’ and substitutes proper judicial process for a kangaroo court. What is being proposed is wrong in principle and it won’t work in practice. We know this approach will lead to wrongful accusations,” said Andrew Heaney, TalkTalk’s Executive Director of Strategy and Regulation.

According to a report this morning, TalkTalk is now threatening to launch legal action if Mandelson makes good on his threats and implements any disconnection scheme without due process.

“If the government moves to stage two we would consider that extra-judicial technical measures and would look to appeal the decision because it infringes human rights,” Heaney told The Guardian. “TalkTalk will continue to resist any attempts to make it impose technical measures on its customers unless directed to do so by a court or recognised tribunal.”

One pressing issue that seems to have been completely ignored is the existence of current copyright laws which are already being used to punish alleged file-sharers in the UK.

Companies like ACS:Law are already making accusations against UK Internet users who they claim are infringing the rights of their clients, demanding £600+ for the alleged infringement of a single music track.

Are we to have a dual system where Internet users can be both disconnected by the government and financially punished by private companies for the same offenses? The government should decide which system is to prevail and pick one, changing the law if necessary.

The full proposals for the graduated response scheme will be detailed in the Digital Economy Bill, set to be published later on this year.

In January we introduced DtecNet as the RIAA’s new evidence collecting outfit, replacing MediaSentry whose evidence gathering techniques have been highly criticized by experts.

The Danish company is not limiting its services to the RIAA though. It is also working with an Irish ISP to support their “3 strikes” regime, and in Australia the company also conducted investigations against alleged pirates.

Apart from their pirate tracking activities, DtecNet also has a business intelligence unit to help their entertainment industry clients “Understand what’s happening and where, and to develop smarter strategies to guide their development, marketing, retailing, distribution and investment initiatives.” The intelligence unit utilizes its insights into the file-sharing community to help out, but unfortunately the unit is not that knowledgeable.

In fact, the whitepaper (pdf) that was published by the DtecNet unit and mirrored all around the web during the last 24 hours, clearly shows that they have no clue about BitTorrent.

In the paper that deals with the recent downtime of the Pirate Bay tracker and how this affects BitTorrent usage, they make several false claims, draw bogus conclusions and report inaccurate statistics. Bogus reports from anti-piracy companies are nothing new, but this is definitely one of the worst we’ve ever seen thus far, and it is already being cited by several respected news outlets.

Let’s take a look at some of the things DtecNet claims and why these claims are bogus, inaccurate or just plain stupid.

Claim: — “After Swedish authorities forced the Internet disconnection of The Pirate Bay, online piracy worldwide dropped substantially on BitTorrent networks as file traders scrambled to find replacement trackers.”

This claim is based on a graph presented by DtecNet (see below) which shows that the number of infringements recorded by the company dropped significantly. This is of course a direct effect of the Pirate Bay tracker downtime. Companies like DtecNet use the tracker to find and report pirates and if it goes down there are less recorded infringements. However, there is no evidence that piracy went down. Most BitTorrent transfers were working fine due to the wonders of DHT (trackerless torrents), including the ones that were using only the Pirate Bay tracker.

Claim: — “The impact of the shutdown is strongly obvious, [...] file trading on BitTorrent, easily the world’s most popular peer-to-peer protocol, dropped virtually overnight by nearly 80 percent.”

This second claim is even more absurd because it suggests that BitTorrent usage dropped by 80 percent based on a graph of recorded infringements. Remember, DtecNet doesn’t track any BitTorrent traffic data. The only thing that their data proves is that, because of the tracker downtime, DtecNet was unable to connect to some of the trackers listed in their database of torrents. Again, the torrents might have worked just fine for users because of DHT.

Claim: — “Over time, infringements through that network [BitTorrent] began to rise again as new trackers became available.”

This seems to suggest that after the Pirate Bay trackers went down several new trackers have appeared, which is simply not true. In fact, DtecNet uses OpenBitTorrent and the Denis Stalker tracker as an example in their paper, two trackers that are hosted on the same network as The Pirate Bay tracker. The only reason the number of recorded infringements began to rise is that these trackers also suffered downtime from which they recovered. DtecNet however seems to be unaware of the relation between the three trackers.

Claim: — DtecNet has created a nice graph (below) that “illustrates the chaos the shutdown caused among various BitTorrent tracker networks, and how more recently the situation appears to be clarifying itself as users find new favorite sites.”

The only confusion we see here is at the DtecNet offices. The company apparently fails to understand that a tracker is something different than a site. There is absolutely no indication that BitTorrent users were looking for new sites (note that The Pirate Bay site was still up), but even if they were this does not mean that there will be any changes in the usage of the various trackers.

Claim: — “About two weeks after the Pirate Bay shutdown, two of the successor trackers – OpenBitTorrent and DenisStalker – temporarily shut down, possibly because they could not handle rising demand.”

This claim is almost hilarious. As pointed out earlier, OpenBitTorrent and DenisStalker are hosted on the same network as The Pirate Bay. It takes no genius to figure this out, and this should be especially obvious for an outfit that deals with BitTorrent trackers on a daily basis, trying to catch pirates. So, the two successor trackers did not collapse under the increased load at all, they went down together with The Pirate Bay.

We could go on for hours refuting pretty much every sentence in the report and we are not the only ones who dispute the know-how of DtecNet’s self-proclaimed business intelligence unit. P2P expert Dr. Pouwelse of the Tribler team at Delft University of Technology looked into the report as well and told TorrentFreak: “They are completely technically incompetent, they are just trying to get sensational press coverage, or both.”

“Mixing up terms like trackers versus website and failure to do basic homework like DNS lookups means they would fail our master course in P2P. Their work suffers from a fundamental methodological error: what our company can’t see does not exist, thus we can make wild absolute claims on a complex global phenomena,” Pouwelse said.

Companies such as DtecNet are earning millions of dollars from the entertainment industry thanks to their piracy tracking activities and the business intelligence they claim to offer. Considering this position it is striking to see how little they actually know about what’s going on, and we fear that this amateurish white paper might actually lose @DtecNetBI some customers, instead of adding new clients to their portfolio.

Chances are, DtecNet will be responsible for gathering evidence against British file-sharers so that Peter Mandelson can have them kicked off the Internet in 2011. Nice to know that important job will be in safe hands.

Earlier this year, the shareholders of Global Gaming Factory agreed to acquire the world’s largest BitTorrent tracker. All the company had to do was come up with $7.8m (SEK 60 million), half of which to be paid in shares.

As anonymous investors pulled out and promises from the shareholders that they would come up with the funds themselves came to nothing, the deadline for the sale passed and the site stayed in the hands of Reservella, the Seychelles-based holding company that acquired The Pirate Bay two years ago.

But for those missing the optimistic press releases, bold statements and dramas of the attempted purchase by GGF, today brings good news.

According to a report, Reservella – with a helping hand from ex-Pirate Bay spokesman Peter Sunde – are in fresh talks with four potential buyers.

While the identities of two of the parties remains unknown, hints have been dropped about the other pair.

The first, GamersGate, is a Swedish company specializing in online computer games. Its CEO Theodore Bergquist, however, is playing his cards close to his chest.

“We are looking at many potential deals,” Bergquist told Di. “All I can say is that The Pirate Bay is an interesting brand loaded with great potential for those who deal with it properly.”

Holding a B.A. degree from Stockholm University, Bergquist joined Paradox Entertainment in May 2001 as CEO and was responsible for overall strategy, financial performance and growth initiatives. In 2004 he acquired the Interactive division of Paradox Entertainment and in April 2006 he became CEO of GamersGate, which was initially Paradox’s digital distribution portal.

Bergquist reported earlier this year that GamersGate had achieved 100% growth in business during 2008, both in terms of revenue and in the amount of new customers and titles on the site. The company is aiming at achieving up to 200% more during 2009. Owning The Pirate Bay’s domain would certainly help them achieve that.

The second potential buyer is a rather more familiar name – the utterly resilient Hans Pandeya.

Sex Addict (titolo originale Boulevard) è un romanzo di esordio che sta facendo molto parlare di sé e del suo autore, Stephen Jay Schwartz.
Da più parti giungono giudizi entusiastici di critici, colleghi e lettori, e c’è chi, come Marcus Sakey, addirittura scomoda paragoni col primo Ellroy o chi come Tess Gerritsen definisce il detective Glass “uno dei protagonisti più complessi e tormentati che mi sia capitato di incontrare”.
Adesso il libro arriva in Italia per Giano, casa editrice che con le nuove voci del thriller fa centro spesso, con la traduzione di Luca Briasco. Per chi si fosse incuriosito come me, ecco la trama:

Hayden Glass di sicuro non ha avuto una vita facile. E’ rimasto orfano di padre quando era un bambino e durante l’infanzia ha convissuto con un perenne senso di colpa che non è mai riuscito a sconfiggere o a controllare.
Ora, detective della Omicidi della polizia di Los Angeles, ha sostituito i propri traumi: invece del senso di colpa, un vuoto permanente che cerca di riempire in un solo modo. Vagando di notte per Sunset Boulevard e caricando in macchina una prostituta dietro l’altra. Hayden Glass è, infatti, un sex addict. E’ preda di un’ossessione che lo perseguita per tutta la sua giornata e lo spinge a comportamenti coattivi che hanno mandato in rovina il suo matrimonio e adesso rischiano di fare lo stesso con la sua carriera di detective.
Chiamato a indagare sull’atroce omicidio della figlia di un noto politico, Glass si ritrova sotto i riflettori. E il clamore cresce quando Los Angeles è turbata dagli assassini inspiegabili di una serie di giovani donne.
Investigando sul caso, Glass scopre così una verità sconvolgente: i delitti hanno un scopo preciso, mirano a tirare in causa una sola persona: lui stesso, come se il serial killer conoscesse i suoi impulsi più reconditi, le sue ossessioni più inconfessabili, e li mettesse in scena attraverso i suoi delitti.

E’ Michael Connelly (di cui abbiamo annunciato recentemente La città buia) il vincitore dell’Anthony Award 2009, con The Brass verdict. L’autore californiano si è imposto su rivali del calibro di Sean Chercover, Louise Penny e Stieg Larsson, al quale è stato attribuito il premio per la migliore opera prima per Uomini che odiano le donne, che va a fare il paio con il Macavity vinto sempre alla Bouchercon di quest’anno.
